Research internship The iBerry Study – Department of Psychiatry
    Erasmus MC, Rotterdam

Background: Psychiatric disorders are among the most burdensome type of diseases because of their prevalence, comorbidity, chronicity and costs for both the individual as well as society. The vast majority of psychiatric morbidity manifesting in adult life has its onset before the age of 25 years, either evolving from childhood emotional and behavioral disorders, or appearing from early adolescence through the mid-twenties. There is growing recognition that the need for care in psychiatry substantially precedes the point that a diagnosis can be assigned according to classical concepts, with negative effects on the treatability of disorders when we wait for perfect diagnostic clarity.

Objective: The iBerry (Investigating Behavioural and Emotional Risk in Rotterdam Youth) Study is a population based prospective cohort of 1022 adolescents from the Rotterdam Rijnmond region, designed to study the transition from subclinical symptoms to psychiatric disorders. Adolescents were derived from the general population by screening on behavioral and emotional problems (SDQ-Y) in the first class of secondary school, with an oversampling of adolescents suspected to be at higher risk for the development of psychiatric disorders.
The baseline and first follow up (2 years after baseline) measurements have been concluded and second follow up measurements (4 years after baseline) are currently taking place. All adolescents are followed up for 10 years and are now 18 years of age or older. They are invited to visit the research center in the Erasmus MC with one of their parents or primary caregivers for a 3,5 hour visit. During the visit they are interviewed (e.g. MINI-plus, SCID, Family Interview for Genetics Studies), cognitive tests are conducted (WAIS), and multiple questionnaires (e.g. ASEBA, suicidality, PQ-16, financial problems) are filled out. Multiple physical measurements are conducted as well (e.g. non-invasive cardiovascular risk assessment, blood pressure, Facial Shape Analysis).

The first study results can be read through the links in the reference section.

What do we offer? We offer an extensive research internship in which you are part of a large student team, consisting of students in Psychology, Medicine, Health Sciences or related studies. You participate in all aspects of the study: inviting participants and their parents for follow-up measurements, datacollection from both adolescents and parents, data-entry, data analysis and participation in team meetings. You will gain substantial research experience in a large-scale study among young people and adults. Apart from this research experience, you can practice your skills in conducting diagnostic interviews and conversation.
The measurements address very diverse topics (e.g. psychotic experiences, suicidality, financial problems, aggressive behavior), students write their master thesis about one of the many different aspects of psychopathology. Final results are presented at the research team.
Please note: this is not a clinical internship, you cannot obtain your BAPD or LOGO.

What are we looking for? We are looking for enthusiastic master students who can work independently but also as a valuable team member. Students have to be present at the Erasmus MC for 4 days a week from 09:30 to 18:00h for a period of 26 weeks (including two weeks of leave and weekly time for writing your thesis). It is not possible to deviate from these working hours. Good command of the Dutch language is a strict requirement since all measurements and all communication are in Dutch.
