Alterations of the immune response in diabetes contributing to tuberculosis susceptibility
Diabetes mellitus (DM) promotes development of active tuberculosis (TB). Individuals with diabetes are at increased risk of getting infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and have a four times higher chance of succumbing to tuberculosis. As the number of people with DM steadily increases globally, so does the number of individuals at increased risk for TB. But which immune responses are altered in diabetes that contribute to increased TB susceptibility?
