    Internship:

Public health studies on novel diagnostics for drug-resistant tuberculosis in Indonesia

    Project background

Drug-resistance threatens global tuberculosis (TB) control. Many drug-resistant TB patients are never diagnosed. In order to improve access to diagnosis, new diagnostic techniques have been and will be introduced in Indonesia. Sputum-based GeneXpert is a rapid molecular test to detect TB and rifampicin-resistant TB, and has been rolled out in the past decade. Since more recently also tongue swabs, and targeted next generation sequencing tools are explored for diagnosis of drug resistance. These will now be tested in Indonesia with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.

To evaluate the implementation of these novel diagnostics, including their impact on the TB program in Indonesia and patient outcomes, your internship could focus on one of the following topics (depending on your preference and in discussion with our partners in Bandung):

    1. Acceptability/feasibility of novel diagnostics among healthcare professionals
    2. Guidance on effectively communicating novel test results to relevant stakeholders (such as healthcare professionals and government bodies)
    3. Geospatial analysis/diagnostic network optimization of GeneXpert in West Java
    4. Health facility assessments in West Java, to evaluate the implementation of GeneXpert
    5. The cascade of care using routine programmatic data during GeneXpert rollout.
    6. Factors that influence where TB patients seek care (e.g. family, religion, stigma, proximity of health services, preferences)

This internship is a great opportunity to:

    1. Work on the most recent advancements in TB diagnostics, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
    2. Experience working in an international context
    3. Work in a diverse, fun, competitive and experienced research group in Bandung (West Java province), and collaborate with our long-term partners at Otago University in New Zealand

    We are looking for:

    • MSc student Biomedical Sciences, with interest in global/public health

    • Able to stay in Bandung for at least 3-4 months
    • Can start early 2024
